A dedicated group of volunteers is keeping history alive in Victoria, Conception Bay North.
The Victoria Heritage Village, which occupies the site of Newfoundland’s only POW camp, started in 1997 with Dan Burke who, along with some other local residents, built a traditional Newfoundland barn.
Vince Butt is with the Heritage Village and says since then the project has grown to include 12 traditional structures including a general store, church and train station.
The one they’re most proud of says Butt, is the WWII barracks, which includes a model of the former POW Camp.
The Village recreates buildings that were once a big part of Newfoundland’s not-too-distant past, all furnished with items collected and donated by local residents.
Efforts are now underway to construct a fire hall complete with fire truck, a barbershop and a school house.
The Village even includes two full-time residents, Jack the Newfoundland pony and Theodore the goat.
