The Town of Deer Lake is taking steps to cut the risk of transmission in light of five cases of COVID-19 on the west coast of the province.
The Department of Health and Community Services says the five are close contacts, all part of the same cluster.
The Deer Lake town council met over the weekend to discuss the recently-identified incidents of coronavirus within the community. They decided, for the sake of public safety, to keep the town office and Hodder Memorial Recreational Complex closed for two weeks—until Monday, December 7.
As well, the town is asking all non-essential businesses to consider ceasing regular operations until that date.
Deer Lake residents are asked to stay home as much as possible.
“Those at higher risk of complications due to COVID-19 should not go out, except to get essentials like groceries and medications. The Town of Deer Lake is encouraging residents that must go out to wear a mask unless medical reasons permit otherwise.”
Western Health is continuing contact tracing, and tests are ongoing.
Anyone who becomes symptomatic is urged to contact 811 for testing. Further information is available at the Government of NL’s website.
