The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Veterinarian Medical Association says the province is experiencing a significant outbreak of kennel cough this year.
Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs.
Dr. Maggie Brown-Burry told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly, they haven’t seen much kennel cough in the province over the last couple of years, but this summer, they’re seeing an average of one new case per day.
The vet says it’s similar to the flu in humans, and not always combatable with a vaccine.
Dr. Brown-Burry says dogs can easily pick up the bug where other dogs frequent, like dog parks or dog daycares.
She says it can be a couple of days to a week before the dog shows symptoms, and can take a week or more to leave the animal’s system, once the symptoms are gone.
