After two-days of allowing outside buyers to come into the province and buy local cod, no companies have registered with Fisheries and Land Resources to avail of the offer.
Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne made the move to open the market for two-weeks as a pilot project when local processors refused to take the product because of an overlap with the capelin fishery.
Byrne says he will be providing daily reports on how many outside buyers register, and where they are located. At the end of day two, no company had registered, and only one company had asked for details on prices.
The minister says two weeks is ample time for mainland buyers to move out product.
Byrne pointed out these companies do not need to process here.
He says this cannot be looked at as a situation where the province is robbing Peter to pay Paul. The minister says there will always be competing interests in the fishery, and that he took this action to solve the problem.
