“The government failed us.”
Jenny Gear of Northwest River says she was shocked to see the extent of damage caused by flooding of the Muskrat Falls Reservoir.
Gear’s photos have been shared widely, eliciting shock both from people who know the land and those who don’t.
Gear says trees, that were never cleared, are being flooded, with only the top of the canopy exposed as the water climbs ever higher.
Gear says what was most shocking to her was seeing a tilt, pulled from the water and smashed to bits by heavy equipment. She calls it a piece of Labrador history lost forever.
Gear says the tilt contained the names of people who have used it over the years while working on the land. She says it was her understanding that the land would be cleared, but she feels duped. She has a meeting today with her MHA, Perry Trimper, but isn’t feeling confident about the outcome.
She says she wishes she had taken a stand earlier with members of the Grand River Keepers and Labrador Land Protectors.
