A fire on the Bell Island ferry Beaumont Hamel Sunday morning caused a temporary disruption to the sailing schedule.
No injuries were reported in the incident which occurred around 8 a.m., shortly after the vessel had departed from Bell Island en route to Portugal Cove.
Area MHA David Brazil tells VOCM News that smoke and fire was contained in the engine room area of the vessel, which was “dead in the water” for a period of time before managing to “limp” into the dock at Portugal Cove.
A second vessel, the Legionnaire, is backfilling for the Beaumont Hamel until the damage is assessed and repairs can be completed.
An update was expected later Sunday on the plan for the coming work week.
