If you thought the blueberries were scarce this summer, you’d be right.
A cool, wet start to to the season is to blame for the scarcity of blueberries in some parts of the province.
Tim Walsh, the nursery manager with the MUN Botanical Garden, says they’ve heard from lots of avid berrypickers telling them that the blueberries are not very plentiful.
Walsh says bees, wasps and other flying insects are the main pollinators of blueberry flowers.
However this year, the pollinators were affected by the rain and cooler temperatures seen in June and July when the blueberries are in bloom.
Not all parts of the province are similarly affected. Some parts of Central Newfoundland and the West Coast saw good starts to summer, and the blueberry crops there are better than the eastern portion of the island.
