SIRT-NL been called in to investigate the recent death of a 35-year-old man in RCMP custody in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The death occurred yesterday, and RCMP notified the province’s Serious Incident Response Team, requesting an independent investigation.

SIRT-NL is still in the process of developing its team but has asked the RNC to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The Serious Incident Response Team will conduct civilian oversight of the Constabulary’s investigation.

SIRT-NL says as the investigation is ongoing, no further information will be released at this time.

SIRT-NL says once fully-operational, it will be able to conduct its own investigations into serious incidents involving police in this province.
