RNC officers on the island’s west coast wrapped up Boxing Day, by apprehending and charging a Bay of Islands man who tried to avoid a checkpoint near Corner Brook.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. last night near Prince Edward Park, as the Constabulary ran the roadside checkpoint on Route 440.
Officers spotted a vehicle turn around in traffic and take off in a northerly direction. Although a patrol vehicle pulled into the path of the fleeing vehicle attempting to stop it, the vehicle refused to stop and continued north. Police did not pursue and its last known location was the town of Irishtown-Summerside.
After a brief investigation, the RNC tracked the vehicle and its driver to Cox’s Cove where he was arrested without incident. The 19-year-old man was charged with Dangerous Operation, Flight from Police, Driving while Suspended and Operating a Motor Vehicle without a Valid Insurance Policy.
The vehicle was impounded and the accused will appear in Corner Brook Provincial Court in March.
