Residents of long term care homes in the province will start being vaccinated sometime next week.
Health Minister Dr. John Haggie says that of the first trays of the COVID-19 vaccine that were delivered to Eastern Health, 90 per cent of those have been administered prior to the New Year (Dec 23). The other 10 per cent was given out over the past few days.
The second round of vaccine trays that were delivered to Eastern Health will be used as the secondary doses for those essential health care workers starting today.
Central Health will be the next location to receive a shipment of the Pfizer vaccines. Haggie says these trays will be split evenly between Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander.
In each location, 50 per cent of the does will be distributed to acute care and COVID essential workers and the other 50 per cent will go to long term care facilities.
Beyond these regions, Haggie says the roll-out of more vaccines will largely depend on what centre gets the next ultra-low freezers ready for use. Haggie says it will likely be Corner Brook or Labrador West.
Haggie hopes that by the middle of next week the provincial government’s dashboard will be updated on a weekly bases include vaccination numbers. Including the number of vaccines received by the province, how many people have been vaccinated in the province and how many doses of each type of vaccine have been given.
