Parts of southeastern Labrador are in the midst of a major winter storm. Rodney Barney, Environment Canada Meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says up to 15 centimetres of snow will fall every 12 hours in Happy Valley-Goose Bay over the course of the weekend along with northeasterly wind gusts of up to 80 km/h at times.
Barney says higher elevations in-land including parts of the Trans-Labrador Highway from Port Hope Simpson to Cartwright Junction will see the most snow where it is expected to be falling at a rate of 3 to 5cm an hour a for a period of 48 to 60 hours with a potential snowfall total from 60 and 100 cms.
The snow will have a significant impact on road transportation as you head inland on the Trans-Labrador Highway. The Department of Justice and Public Safety is reminding residents of southeastern Labrador to stay indoors if possible and to avoid unnecessary travel.
