A major system failure at a Paradise sewer station is costing the town $50,000 a day to keep things moving.
Staff are up against a complex situation, after the lift station on St. Thomas Line broke down on Monday, August 12.
Mayor Dan Bobbett says about 75 per cent of Paradise’s wastewater is channeled through the station on its way to the local treatment plant. However, that high volume is rendering it impossible to conduct repairs. They’ve had to incorporate pumper trucks to bring waste from the lift station to higher ground, to ensure it carries along to the St. Thomas Line Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Once new equipment arrives, Bobbett says they will be able to tap out the trucks and lower levels at the station in order to conduct emergency repairs.
Bobbett says the town intends to seek assistance from the provincial government.
They’re looking to work with the Department of Municipal Affairs to see if there are emergency funds available to help with the unforeseen costs.
