The union which represents teachers is not surprised to see 22 schools in metro with at least one person test positive for COVID-19.
Eastern Health had released next to no information on schools other than Mount Pearl Senior High out of concern of identifying persons with positive results, however, last evening they named the 21 other schools.
Dean Ingram, President of the NLTA, is calling on the provincial government to improve the safety protocols in the schools. He says we will never know if we are being too careful, but we will know if we haven’t been careful enough.
Ingram says they have been consistently saying since July that the public health protocols that are in schools are inconsistent with the precautions required for most community spaces and other public and private sector workplaces.
But he states the important thing is moving forward; there is an opportunity to learn from this experience and to reconsider what effective public health precautions for schools should look like.
