The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating the sudden death of a man in St. John’s lockup, Friday afternoon.
Police responded to the facility on Water Street shortly after 2 p.m. and confirmed that the 48-year-old had died. He was in custody at the time.
The RNC says it will work alongside the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety says a thorough review will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the death, including staff response and related policies and procedures.
The investigation is ongoing.
