The most recent survey of shrimp stocks off our shores shows slight increases across the board.
However, DFO says the numbers in Area 6—the bread and butter for inshore harvesters—remain low or critical.
That doesn’t bode well for total allowable catches, or the TAC, for the upcoming fishing season.
Those numbers will be released in the coming weeks following consultations with industry players and Indigenous groups.
That feedback and the science will then be forwarded to the federal fisheries minister in setting the catch rates for this year.
