VOCM News has learned the death was a suicide.
RNC officers responded to the Supreme Court building, where the temporary holding cells are located, in the early afternoon of February 26.
It was later confirmed that a 48-year-old man had died while being held in custody there.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety said a thorough review will be conducted into the death, including staff response and related policies and procedures.
Two years ago, a report into the state of the province’s jails—triggered by four deaths in one year—concluded the jails and prisoners were suffering from a mental health crisis.
At the time, Justice Minister Andrew Parsons said he hoped that report would result in an improved correctional system.
