From roundabouts to park bleachers, the City of St. John’s has approved $26-million worth of capital projects for the coming year.
The single largest expenditure of almost $5-million will go toward the construction of the new Mews Centre, next to the Mundy Pond softball field.
Another $2-million is earmarked for grind and patchwork on city roads, while $1.6-million has been set aside for a new park in Galway.
$500,000 worth of grants will be distributed to community groups, and there’s $700,000 for sidewalks.
The acquisition of new vehicles and water-related projects account for almost $7-million from the fund.
There’s also a quarter of a million put aside for roundabouts as well as on-and-off ramps where Goldstone Street meets Team Gushue Highway.
Meanwhile, the city is holding back almost $4-million as insurance against the unpredictability of the pandemic.
Unlike the larger capital budget that’s cost-shared with the feds and province, the money for these projects comes from city revenue and other sources such as the federal gas tax fund.
