A repeat, registered sex offender has been sentenced to seven months in jail for his latest offenses.
Matthew Twyne, 35, pleaded guilty to being near a place frequented by children, and breaking a previous court order.
He did both on December 19 of last year, the same day he was released from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary after doing time for similar offenses.
Twyne was spotted loitering in the parking lot of MAX Athletics on St. Clare Avenue, which hosts afterschool programs for kids. A passerby recognized him from media coverage and called the police.
Twyne suggested he wandered onto the lot while looking for cigarette butts and didn’t know it was a place where children went. Judge Lori Marshall didn’t buy it, noting Twyne has been living in the St. John’s area since 2014, and the onus was on him to be aware of his surroundings and careful where he goes.
That said, the judge acknowledged jail doesn’t appear to be a deterrent, citing the 96 related convictions Twyne has racked up over the past 20 years. Seven of those involved indecent exposure and exposing himself to children, with the majority of others involving breaching court orders.
Twyne was sentenced to seven months in jail. With time already served he has 93 days left in total.
