The City of St. John’s is warning against activities in their watersheds that pose a variety of health risks.
The city says recent patrols have found an increase in ATV and snowmobile use within the watersheds and sometimes on top of the water source itself.
Councillor Sandy Hickman says such activities are very dangerous, noting that it is especially dangerous to be venturing out onto any body of water this time of year.
As well, the operation of such machines—as well as cutting wood, fishing, and setting campfires—is illegal as it compromises the integrity of the water.
We've noticed an increase in snowmobile use in our watersheds.
This is illegal and threatens the quality of our drinking water.
Ice on water supply ponds is unstable as water levels fluctuate and water intakes can change flow patterns. https://t.co/UYXOcQ83Ow #nlwx pic.twitter.com/og7dvFUoUq
