In 2020, 160 women and girls were killed by violence in Canada. Of those, 128 were killed by a man known to them.
The Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability documents femicides as they occur in Canada, and monitors state, legal, and social responses to the killings. They released last year’s figures on Wednesday.
Jenny Wright, a member of the observatory, says they found that women in rural communities were at greater risk.
The highest number of cases last year were in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and Nova Scotia. While the average age of victims is older, with victims between the ages of 15 and 64.
