Pooling water and reduced visibility could be an issue for most of the island today as a messy weather system moves through.
According to Juliana Paul a meteorologist with Environment Canada, up to 9 mm of rain will fall today in the St. John’s Metro region and Northern Avalon, with 15-25 mm more tonight.
The rain transitions to freezing rain and ice pellets late this evening then snow just after midnight, with 5-10 cm of snow falling into early tomorrow morning, with southerly winds gusting up to 90 km/h.
Paul says the southern Avalon and Burin peninsula could see up to 40 mm of rain before the transition to snow this afternoon. Southerly winds could gust up to 100 km/h.
There are snowfall warnings today from west to east, across central and the northeast. Between 15 and 30 cm is expected at times heavy.
The temperature today is expected to get up to 7 degrees; combine that with strong southerly winds and rain, Paul says pooling water or minor flooding will be an issue.
Temperatures go below freezing overnight which will cause slick road conditions.
Paul says the weather takes a turn tomorrow.
Paul says we should see some sun tomorrow afternoon which will continue through to the weekend and early into next week with temperatures between plus 5-10 degrees. The warm weather is expected to continue through the rest of the week, how warm it’s going to be, Paul says that remains to be seen.
