A young man accused of setting fire to a house in downtown St. John’s last week is seeking a quick resolution to the matter.
22-year-old Justin Whelan faces charges of arson, assault, and mischief.
In court this morning, he sought a “speedy disposition,” meaning Whelan wants the case over and done with as soon as possible. That could happen as early as next week when he’s expected to enter a plea. Until then, Whelan will remain in custody.
Police were called to the Patrick Street area shortly after 9 a.m. last Wednesday after reports of a disturbance in the area. Around the same time, they were redirected to nearby Alexander Street where firefighters were responding to a house fire.
Whelan was arrested in the area a short time later.
