It turns out that four people who were given the ability to vote by phone because of “administrative errors” with their mail-in ballots will have to be accommodated in another way.
Sandra Gillam in Labrador West says her daughter was one of four eligible voters in her household, but never received her kit, even though she had registered.
Gillam told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that Elections NL informed them that her daughter’s kit was mailed out last Saturday, but when she expressed doubt it would arrive on time, arrangements were made for her to vote over the phone.
Elections NL was informed by legal counsel yesterday that voting by phone is not permitted according to the legislation. Now Elections NL is working with the four voters affected to find another option for them to exercise their franchise.
Gillam says extending the election deadline hasn’t provided greater access, especially to those in more remote areas.
