The Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association is looking forward to working with the newly elected government to improve schools in the province.
NLTA President Dean Ingram says during the provincial election assurances were given to the education system. Ingram says he is looking forward to hearing the details of a commitment made by Premier Furey to immediately conduct a long-overdue independent review of the Teacher Allocation Model.
Government temporarily increased guidance counselors and school administrators for the 2020-2021 school year, but Ingram says no assurances were given that the increase would continue past next year.
Ingram also says class sizes remain an issue, but further to that are issues with the composition of classrooms. He says it’s not simply the number of students in a classroom, but the resources needed within a classroom to address the needs of students.
Ingram says they need to address these issues now, so they don’t continue to be problems post-COVID.
