The Atlantic Groundfish Council is reinforcing the opinion that continued patience is needed from all stakeholders as cod stocks remain in the critical zone.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans released their assessment of the stock on Thursday.
Karen Dwyer, the DFO’s Stock Lead for Northern Cod, notes there is some potential for growth over the next year. However, this is dependent on the levels of capelin. She explains that capelin levels are expected to be low for the next few years, meaning limited growth potential for cod.
In light of this, the council is reminding harvesters that significant growth won’t happen over any single year, which is why restraint is needed.
Council member and CEO of Icewater Seafoods, Alberto Wareham notes that they have been advocating for “conservative, sustainable catch limits” that follow the best science and are in line with their long-term views.
