Premier Andrew Furey and his new cabinet were sworn in this morning at Government House.
The cabinet has increased in size from 14 to 16 members, including the Premier.
While there’s no gender equity this time around, the number of women in cabinet has increased by two—to five—with Pam Parsons and Krista Lynn Howell joining Siobhan Coady, Lisa Dempster, and Sarah Stoodley.
Derek Bennett and Brian Warr are out as ministers, making way for new blood in John Hogan and John Abbott. Hogan will service as Minister of Justice as well as Attorney General.
Meanwhile, Steve Crocker moves from Justice to Tourism. Derrick Bragg and Elvis Loveless are switching roles with Bragg taking on the Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture role and Loveless moving to Transportation.
Bernard Davis leaves Tourism to oversee the office of Environment, Climate Change, and Labour.
However, it’s business as usual for Stoodley, Gerry Byrne, John Haggie, Tom Osborne, and Andrew Parsons who keep the jobs they had before the election.
New MHAs will be sworn in on Monday, followed by the opening of the legislature to elect a Speaker for the House of Assembly.
Meanwhile, the interim leader of the official Opposition says Premier Furey’s decision to upsize his cabinet from 14 to 16 was surprising. He notes that puts an added cost of about $1-million on the House of Assembly.
However, he assumes Furey made the decision to best implement his programs and policies—which Brazil hopes will be in the best interest of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
