It’ll be a few days before the new cabinet ministers get their mandate letters.
Except for Justice Minister John Hogan, who got his marching orders minutes after being sworn in yesterday—and it’s fair to say he has his work cut out for him.
Premier Andrew Furey told reporters Hogan’s first task will be to fix the Elections Act.
Hogan then followed Furey at the microphone. He says today’s act was drafted in the early 1990s and never contemplated the logistics of conducting an election during a pandemic; he notes the world has changed and the act —including other ways of voting—must be updated to reflect that.
Hogan, a lawyer who represented the Consumer Advocate at the Muskrat Falls Inquiry, is one of four rookie cabinet ministers.
Furey said he wants work on the act to begin immediately.
Asked if Chief Electoral Officer Bruce Chaulk should be worried about his job, the Premier would only say everything is on the table.
