A 36-hour delay in a Labrador medivac had more to do with operations at Labrador Grenfell Health than the air ambulance system, according to Health Minister John Haggie.
A 73-year-old man in Port Hope Simpson had to wait from Friday morning until Saturday night before being airlifted to St. John’s. At last word, he was on life support with sepsis due to an infection in his leg.
Haggie says it’s an unfortunate set of circumstances that has triggered a review within the health authority.
He says there’s a consensus that the problems had more to do with “significant potential operational issues” in the care setting at Labrador Grenfell Health rather than any fault with the air ambulance and medivac system.
Haggie expects recommendations from the review will help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
