The Executive Director of Legendary Coasts is hopeful that St. Pierre et Miquelon will be able to open to Newfoundland and Labrador even if the Atlantic Bubble doesn’t happen.
The French territory is hoping to join the bubble this summer, showing off it’s new vehicle ferry in Fortune yesterday.
Territorial President Bernard Briand departed the ferry yesterday morning in Fortune in a car, which immediately turned back onto the vessel to illustrate how the French islands are now prepared to take vehicle traffic.
With Variants of Concern responsible for a huge spike in COVID cases in many parts of the country, including Ontario and New Brunswick, questions remain about whether the Atlantic Bubble will be possible.
Chris Sheppard of Legendary Coasts is hopeful that even if the Atlantic Bubble doesn’t go ahead, St. Pierre could still open to Newfoundland and Labrador. He believes the benefits aren’t just economic, but psychological as well, allowing people to travel and see something different.
St. John’s East MP Weighs in on Bubble with St. Pierre et Miquelon
Meanwhile, one of the province’s representatives in Ottawa says he is open to seeing St. Pierre et Miquelon join the Atlantic Bubble.
However, St. John’s East MP Jack Harris says that decision is more of a public health decision rather than a political one.
He explains there are many viewpoints to consider at the federal and provincial levels, and it is not an easy decision to make.
Harris does say that it is a “great idea” and he will be supportive of it if the public health measures can be looked after.
