Indigenous leaders in the province have wrapped up their regular weekly call with the Premier, but they’re declining comment for now on their discussions around changing the name of Red Indian Lake.
A spokesperson for Sagamaw Mi’sel Joe tells VOCM News there will be a news release, but it’s not clear who will issue it and when.
It was also noted that Innu leadership was unable to be on today’s call.
Government announced last week there was consensus among the Indigenous leaders to rename Red Indian Lake: ‘Wantaqo’ti Qospem’— a Mi’kmaq phrase meaning “peaceful lake.”
But some have questioned whether it should be a Beothuk name since it was the resting place of Beothuk remains that were removed and will soon be returned to that land.
Area residents are also wondering why they weren’t consulted on the issue.
