The remaining 21 crew onboard the Federal Montreal—a cargo ship at anchor in Conception Bay—are holding their own.
The federal government, through the Public Health Agency of Canada, is coordinating the response to the vessel after a crewman got sick and had to be taken to hospital.
The vessel was en route from Hamilton, Ontario to Spain when the crew member fell ill. The vessel was diverted to Conception Bay once a doctor advised that he would need to seek medical assistance.
That man remains in hospital in St. John’s.
Arrangements have been made to supply the vessel with needed PPE and cleaning supplies as well as oxygen in case the crew needs it.
None of the remaining crew members, all of whom are Indian nationals, have any direct interactions with people on shore. The vessel will remain at anchor in the bay for the time being.
