The president of Memorial University welcomes some of the recommendations from two recent reports covering higher learning in Newfoundland and Labrador, including one which would reduce its reliance on the provincial government. That would mean higher costs for tuition.
Vianne Timmons says the tuition freeze has not achieved its objective, which was to help those students in need.
MUN has the lowest tuition of any university in the country. Timmons says the low costs ended up helping everyone instead of just those in need.
Any increase in course offerings would not apply to students already enrolled.
Timmons says they made a contract with students already in the system and they will stick to that contract.
