Temporary air service has been arranged on the Fogo Island-Change Islands ferry run as repairs are carried out on the Legionnaire.
The vessel was damaged after it struck the wharf at Farewell on Tuesday. Repairs have been underway ever since.
One of the vessel’s thrusters stopped operating due to an electrical issue causing the vessel to strike the wharf. It’s not the first time the vessel has encountered problems with its thruster. Both the Legionnaire and her sister ferry the Veteran, have seen repeated problems over the years.
In the meantime, four fixed-wing flights per day are now in place while the repairs continue. Passengers must wear masks at all times.
Helicopter flights have also been arranged and will be available based on demand.
Residents who wish to arrange flights must contact 709-256-7484 for flights between Gander and Fogo Island and 709-466-2291 for helicopter flights. Priority will be given to essential workers, patients traveling for medical reasons, and passengers transporting essential goods.
