Memorial University’s Board of Regents is recommending that MUN officially change its name to include “and Labrador.”
The official name is Memorial University of Newfoundland but the Board of Regents says the university has a growing presence in Labrador and a broadened scope and mandate of the Labrador Institute.
“Having Labrador formally added to the legal name is significant and meaningful as we fulfil our special obligation to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”—Dr. Vianne Timmons
The idea of creating a degree-granting campus of Memorial, in, by, and for Labrador was first raised in the 2019 Labrador Campus Strategic Task Force report.
The Board of Regents approved the proposal to change the name of the university in March and it’s been sent to Education Minister Tom Osborne for consideration because the name is established in provincial legislation.
