The man originally accused of threatening to kill politicians and stop the provincial election has instead been convicted of dangerous driving and fleeing from police.
The frightening incident played out on the morning of January 26 and had the mounties scrambling to find 67-year-old George Brake, who was somewhere between his home in Shoal Brook and the town of Deer Lake.
Police got a tip that Brake was at a gas station in the town of Glenburnie saying he was “God,” that he had guns and knives, and was on his way to execute politicians.
RCMP set up a roadblock which Brake avoided by driving on the shoulder on the highway, reaching speeds of 155 km/h—including 90 in a school zone. He was eventually arrested in the Deer Lake parking lot of a candidate in the election.
At the time he had 36 different types of knives in his pickup.
Meanwhile, police got a warrant to search his travel trailer in Shoal Brook where they seized two rifles and bullets. That search has since been deemed invalid and unlawful.
Last week, the Crown withdrew the charges of uttering death threats and possessing dangerous weapons, saying there was no likelihood of conviction.
In Corner Brook provincial court this morning, Brake’s lawyer asked for a sentence of time served—or about five months—for dangerous driving and failing to stop for police during the chase.
Brake, who has been in custody since his arrest in January, today told the judge he feels he got what he deserved and has done the time for his crimes.
He’ll find out next week if the judge agrees. Brake will be sentenced Friday, May 21.
