The cost of tearing down the old Grace Hospital nurse’s residence could be in excess of $2-million says the Department of Transportation and Works.
The multi-storey building has become an eyesore, serving as a magnet for vandalism, urban explorers and flocks of pigeons.
The nurse’s residence is the last standing structure on the site of the old Grace Maternity Hospital which shut down in 2000 and was torn down a few years later.
A 2018 assessment of the nurse’s residence identified asbestos and other hazardous materials and outlined what needs to happen if the building is demolished.
The materials are only dangerous when they become disturbed or damaged says the Department of Transportation and Works.
The department says it is currently reviewing some requests for portions of the land. The hazardous materials assessment will be provided to anyone interested in purchasing the property and demolishing the building.
