2020 was a record year for the Atlantic Hurricane season, and it looks as though the 2021 season will also be more active than normal.
According to data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the upcoming season will be above average by all accounts. They predict between 13 and 20 named storms, six to ten of which will be hurricanes, and three to five major hurricanes.
Bob Robichaud, Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with the Canadian Hurricane Centre, says although the season will be more active than usual, there is no way to predict what the impact might be on Atlantic Canada—noting that the predictions are meant for the entire Atlantic basin.
He says they can’t tell where specific storms are going to form, where they’ll go or how strong they’ll be. Ultimately, they need to wait until the systems form before they can make any predictions.
