With a federal election looming, the Mayor of Port aux Basques is renewing his call for the elimination of cost recovery for Marine Atlantic.
John Spencer gave a presentation in Ottawa earlier this year to the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities in Ottawa, asking that the 65 per cent cost recovery on constitutional services, and the 100 per cent cost recovery on all other services be eliminated.
However, Spencer says he was not satisfied with the committee’s recommendation.
They told him Marine Atlantic should negotiate with Transport Canada, which he says is like a hen negotiating with a fox.
During the 2015 Federal Election, the Liberals committed to looking at eliminating the cost recovery system, which has not happened.
He says he wants those in power currently to honour that commitment, and for those running to get behind the initiative, which he says affects every corner of the province.
A lot of our groceries and pharmaceuticals come in to this province via the ferry, and the inflation of rates due to cost recovery means increased prices for everyone.
