The union that represents fishery workers says what’s needed is more competition in the industry.
The Fish Price Setting Panel has again come in with a price for cod at well below $1 per pound.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan says having the industry controlled by three or four large companies does anything but ensure harvesters get the greatest value for the product.
Sullivan acknowledges that there are challenges created by being on an island but wants the government to allow people who have legitimate business plans to come in and look at smaller, unique markets.
He says so many times in the last number of years, companies decline to buy whether it’s cod or squid because they don’t get the massive profit margins they want.
