Last week the Newfoundland Pony Society lamented the fact that no Newfoundland ponies would be born in the province this year.
That came as news to Paige Payne of Parsons’ Pond whose mare Princess Tammie is with foal and due in July.
Payne says she bred Princess with her stallion Spirit of Topsail in the fall and the Newfoundland Pony Society now has it all on record.
Stallions are usually kept away from mares and foals, requiring extra land and hay. That’s where Payne’s grandfather stepped in, providing loving care to Spirit until he fell ill and passed away last year.
That’s why Payne is hopeful Princess is having a colt. She says if it is a colt, she’s naming it after her grandfather who cared for Spirit ever since she acquired the stallion.
Payne says this will be the last foal for Princess as she’s getting on in years, but Spirit, who is the foal of Skipper—a well-known Newfoundland pony sire—is ready and available for breeding purposes.
The Newfoundland Pony Society says Payne represents the next generation of pony owners and breeders. She’s had Newfoundland ponies for the last eight years since she was 20.
Congrats to Willow Creek Stables in Ottawa on the birth of 2 little beauty foals. https://t.co/3sJaqaNVkt
