The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has wrapped up its road safety week. This year’s theme was “Not Worth the Risk” but police say it’s obvious the risks did not deter some from driving dangerously.
As a result of RNC activities and the help of the RCMP throughout the week, police handed out 429 tickets.
Aggressive driving and speeding-related offences resulted in 280 of those tickets, 50 were handed out for licencing and registration-related offences, while 11 were issued to drivers using cell phones.
“Operating vehicles in our communities today is so routine that we often overlook the significant power we hold with that steering wheel in our hands. Even the slightest distraction can change a person’s life forever. Behaviours such as impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and other high-risk activity has already had tragic impacts right here in our communities. Nobody is immune to the effects of dangerous behaviour on our roads, and the RNC will be working to partner with our community as a whole to change behaviours, because it’s not worth the risk.”
-Cst. James Cadigan, RNC Media Relations Officer
On Saturday, May 22, police stopped a vehicle on the TCH after it was clocked at 170 km/h. As well, three impaired drivers were arrested and two drivers had their licences suspended after they blew over the legal limit.
The RNC is also asking the public not to share details on the location of police vehicles or checkpoints on social media as it gives those who may be driving while impaired, without insurance, registration or valid driver’s licence the ability to avoid such initiatives and continue to pose a risk to the community.
