The provincial government is in the process of reviewing the legislation related to the euthanization of animals.
Last week, Heavenly Creatures raised concerns over the use of the gas chamber method, calling it “outdated and barbaric.”
Derrick Bragg, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture, notes that there are currently four or five municipalities that use the gas chambers, and for the most part it is to help control the stray cat population.
Bragg says when the issue was first brought up, he was “mortified” to hear that it’s still being done, but after speaking with one of the municipalities he understands why the method may be needed. However, he believes it should only be used as the “absolute last resort.”
As part of his mandate letter, Bragg explains his department is reviewing the entire Animal Health and Protection Act—which includes regulations regarding euthanization.
Bragg says it’s still early on in that process so he can’t comment on what potentially could be done, but they are looking at all aspects of the legislation to make sure things are done right. He says deciding to end a pet’s life is one of the hardest decisions a person can make.
