A combined nearly $11-million is going towards a project that will help increase efficiency at the Port of Corner Brook, while moving goods to international markets.
A new warehouse will be built to store goods, and a new crane will be acquired and installed to load and unload container ships.
Five groups are pitching in. The federal government is contributing $5.5-million, and the provincial government $850,000. The Corner Brook Port Corporation is pitching in $2.3 million while Logistec adds another $1.7 million and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper $625,000.
Premier Dwight Ball says the infrastructure will complement what’s already there.
He says this sets up the private sector and companies like Kruger to deliver direct shipments to international markets right out of Corner Brook.
Ball says this will result in faster delivery to customers, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing productivity at the port.
