A man is alive today after the heroic actions of a lighthouse keeper and others who saw him in a precarious situation with not much separation from the icy waters of the Narrows far below.
Barry Rogers of Iceberg Quest Tours was the first to spot the potential tragedy and Larry Daley, who was out for a spin in his inflatable boat early Saturday afternoon, picked up on his call for assistance from anyone in the area and proceeded to Fort Amherst on the south side of the harbour.
Daley immediately began contacting agencies, including the Canadian Coast Guard Station, for help but in the interim, Karen Hanlon, who was on duty at the lighthouse station, jumped a chain-link fence and climbed down the cliff to the aid of the unresponsive individual.
A man and his stepson were soon on the scene to help, as well as Larry who helped coordinate the activity from the waters below.
Larry says Karen was calm, cool and collected as firefighters and police arrived on scene to help lift the man to safety.
So they straddled around the person, creating a wall while they’re holding onto the rocks. He says they then got a good response from the person who was in danger.
Daley is going to recommend to the Coast Guard that Karen Hanlon be recognized for her bravery.
