The sounds of amateur radio—more commonly referred to as ham radio—will resonate at Pippy Park in St. John’s this weekend to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio.
For over 100 years, ham radio has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities.
Take for instance the time when a fire at the Bell Aliant exchange building on Allandale Road 15 years ago knocked out all telephone coverage for eastern Newfoundland for five hours before it was temporarily restored.
Members of the Society of NL Radio Amateurs (SONRA) stepped in to help some outlying communities maintain contact with first responders in the event of an emergency.
Field Day this Saturday is a rehearsal should such an emergency event occur again. The event takes place just beyond the Fluvarium.
