A single-vehicle crash in Portugal Cove – St Philips caused a significant traffic disruption during rush hour last evening.
Emergency crews were called to a stretch of Thorburn Road near Sunset Way shortly before 5:00 p.m.
The driver of a westbound SUV had lost control, crossing the road and striking a utility pole, breaking it from the ground and causing live power lines to fall across the road. The SUV continued into the ditch near a driveway, narrowly missing a tree.
Reports from the scene indicate the male driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, may have suffered a medical emergency that lead to the crash. He was assessed by paramedics on the scene, but appeared none worse for wear despite the ordeal.
The SUV suffered significant damage.
Thorburn Road was blocked between Dogberry Hill Road and Sunset Way for close to an hour as crews with Newfoundland Power removed the live power lines.
