Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a man on a St. John’s street almost one year ago.
47-year-old James Cody died of a single gunshot just after 4 a.m. on a Sunday morning last July. It happened outside 40 Craigmillar Avenue—a house owned by 44-year-old Kurt Churchill.
Last night, Toronto police—acting on a warrant issued by the RNC—arrested Churchill in connection with the shooting.
He’s facing charges of second degree murder, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, careless use and possession of an unauthorized firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm, and tampering with the serial number of a firearm.
Churchill is expected to make an appearance in a Toronto court today, but the RNC say he will be transferred back to this province as soon as possible to answer to the charges here.
Police describe the investigation to this point as exhaustive with more than 60 witnesses interviewed.
They would not say if Churchill had been under surveillance since the shooting, but did reiterate that Churchill and Cody were known to each other.
RNC Inspector Colin McNeil said there is still a lot of work to do in the case, but added he hoped the arrest would ease concerns of the public now that Churchill is in custody.
