Memorial Day events are going ahead across the province today to mark the sacrifice of the Newfoundland Regiment during the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916.
Hundreds of Newfoundland soldiers were killed on the first day of the July Drive, leaving an impact still felt today across the former Dominion.
There will be no Memorial Day Parade this year, however a ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the National War Memorial in St. John’s.
The ceremony can be viewed through the Royal Canadian Legion’s Facebook page.
