The province’s rich labour history is being celebrated this evening with the release of a new CD compiled by local musician and songwriter, Jim Payne.
Work, Work, Work – Work and Labour History In Song is a collaboration between the Ray Greening Memorial Fund of St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, MUN’s Centre for Research into Music, Media and Place and the Federation of Labour.
Payne says most Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are familiar with traditional songs about the fishery and mining but he wanted to go beyond that—including domestic and unpaid labour.
He also wanted to tell the stories of workers—touching on topics like retirement and injuries suffered in the workplace.
Over 50 performers from all over the province were involved in the project.
The official launch takes place this evening from 7:30 to 9:30 at the Johnson GEO Centre in St. John’s.
