One resident of Shea Heights is lucky to be alive following a house fire late yesterday afternoon.
Fire crews were called to number 67 Blackhead Crescent shortly before 4:00 to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the single-storey home.
Acting Platoon Chief Roger Hounsell, with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department said a female resident was out of the home upon their arrival. Reports from the scene indicate the lady had been woken from her sleep and alerted to the fire by a passerby. She was uninjured.
Crews spent the next two hours battling the blaze, which destroyed a large portion of the house. There was initial concern about a 100-litre propane tank stored in the basement, however it was quickly located and shut off.
